I haven’t written here for about six months. The idea always seemed to be drifting away from me, and there was always some excuse to put it off and say, “Not today, maybe tomorrow.” A huge source of this feeling for me is the need to put everything in its right place. Things have happened and my life has changed; how can I post about some random thought without updating my home page? Dependencies like this stop me from doing the actual thing.
In that spirit, I will try something new. It started with me seeing more and more daily posts from combatdavey’s blog, titled “october 10 etc,” “october 9 etc,” “october 8 etc,” and, well, you get the point. He writes daily, usually starting with a few paragraphs of writing, followed by some links he finds interesting. I like that. Then I read Simon Willison’s post on running a link blog, where he shares his tips from posting interesting links since November 2003(!). “I wish people would post more links to interesting things,” he writes, and I liked many of his tips and takeaways (always include the names of the people! I’ll at least try to aim for that).
This will not necessarily be daily, this will not necessarily be the first of many posts. This will be just this post, and I’ll see where it takes me (this is me lowering the bar for myself for any next post).
- Clues by Sam - This is an absolute gem. It is a daily game, hard and frustrating, but really makes the wheels in mind turn. It reminds me of logic puzzles I loved as a kid. (via The Jolly Teapot).
- Spunge - Salehe Bembury, one of my favorite footwear designers, is starting his own footwear lineup and company. I like many of his designs and own a few of his shoes with New Balance and Crocs (as I do love my shoes) and I am excited about his new path. He also maintains a great Instagram presence and recently published a book called "I Make Shoes".
- Weaving Shibusa - I love Japanese Denim and Japanese craftsmanship in general, ever since I went to Japan two years ago. It was nice to encounter this 2016 documentary. Although it was not as informative as I had hoped, it was really cool to see almost all of the main Japanese denim brands’ founders speak. For more backstory and information, I recommend W. David Marx’s excellent book, “Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style”.
