The Meditation of Setting Up a New Computer

I love the process of setting up a new computer. There's something meditative about taking a device with default settings and transforming it into something uniquely mine—something that helps me get things done.

I keep all my documents backed up on iCloud, so moving from one Mac to another is seamless. While I appreciate that my documents move with me without any effort, I prefer not to transfer configurations and apps as they are. I like to set everything up from scratch for two main reasons:

  1. It gives me a chance to review my apps and configurations—is everything I have installed necessary? I like to keep my workspace minimal, so I delete what I don’t use. I want my computer to reflect only what I love and need.

  2. It allows me to update my methods. I like to read setup guides before configuring my new computer. Is there a new app that can replace something I do manually? Is there a new CLI tool that can make my life easier? Is there an open-source alternative to something I already use?

I take my time setting up a new computer, doing it step by step, and I enjoy every moment of it.
